Marriage Counseling: How Long Does it Take?
As a Marriage Counselor in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area, I am often asked the question, “How long does marriage counseling last?” This is a very good question. My answer is that it depends on how big the problem is. If you compare it to a physical injury, you don’t need to go to the Emergency Room if you have a sprained ankle, yet, if you have a heart attack, you better call 911. The level of intervention is always proportion to the level of the problem.
In the first session, I spend an hour and a half with my new clients to get a clear idea of what the problem is, and we figure out how much counseling is needed to resolve the problem. If a couple is dealing with some basic communication problems, we may resolve it in 3 sessions. If a couple is healing from a big issue such as infidelity, it may take up to 12 sessions or more. My goal is to get to the root of the problem, resolve it, and close the counseling process.
What is the answer to how long does it take? I can answer that after the first session, yet it is usually between 3-12 sessions.
