(Note from Dean Sunseri, LPC)

On November 8, 2011, and December 14, 2011, I received a letter from the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologist.  The letter demanded that I not use the term “premier specialist in Sports Psychology,” “Sports Psychology,” or “Sports Psychologist.” I have never referred to myself as a Sports Psychologist privately or publicly. I have clearly stated that I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I have assisted NFL football players, Professional Baseball Players, a Professional Hockey team, PGA Golf professionals in their mental skills to enhance performance.  As a Licensed Professional Counselor, my training is in Mental Health Counseling and the use of mental skills to enhance performance.  For the record, I am not a “Sports Psychologist.” The only term that I have used in the past is “sports psychology,” and I have made every effort to remove this term from my web site and other web content that I am authorized to control. With the threat of being charged with a misdemeanor, the Louisiana State Board of Examiners demands that I not use terms such a “sports psychology,” “psychologist,” “sports psychologist” or “psychological.”  I will respect their wishes, and cease and desist the use of these terms.

I am trained in Mental Health Counseling, and I have a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from the University of New Orleans. I am Licensed in the State of Louisiana as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I also have experience as a Collegiate Athlete as a baseball player at Auburn University. I worked with one of the best sports trainers in the United States, Mackie Shilstone, for over 5 years, as a specialist in assisting athletes develop mental skills to improve performance.  I worked with Ron Gring, one of the best golf instructors in the United States, for over 4 years, in assisting many golf professionals and amateurs in improving their performance by teaching them mental skills.  My track records clearly shows that I can assist athletes to improve their performance by the development of mental skills.  The mistake that I have made in the past has been that I have used the term “sports psychology.”  As stated above, I will not use this term in association with my services now and in the future.
